A citizen was arrested for making "violent statements and death threats" on social media, according to a statement from security authorities.
According to the statement, a mechanic identified as ID, a passionate political supporter, reacted angrily after discovering a video in which a cyberactivist issued a death threat against his political leader. In response, he posted a disturbing video of his own, brandishing bladed weapons and calling for revenge.
The violent message caused fear and outrage online. Alerted by the content, the Cybercrime Task Force, supported by the National Agency for the Security of Information Systems (ANSSI), tracked down the individual.
He was identified, located, and arrested. During questioning, ID admitted to acting under the influence of emotion, the statement reveals.
However, under the cybercrime law and the penal code, he is being prosecuted for incitement to hatred and issuing death threats.
Authorities also reminded the public that, during election periods and at all times, individuals must act responsibly online.
