Focal points from the institutions involved in the drafting process of the Sixth Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE 6) took part in a training workshop on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Abidjan-Cocody.
The meeting, initiated by the Ministry of National Education and Literacy through the Directorate for the Coordination and Monitoring of Literacy Programs (DCSPA), is part of the monitoring and evaluation process of GRALE. Led by UNESCO, the report aims to assess global progress in adult learning and education, identify persistent challenges, and guide the implementation of recommendations from the International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA).
The workshop’s main objective was to strengthen the participants’ capacity to ensure a harmonized understanding of the questionnaire, collect high-quality data, and enable a meaningful contribution from Côte d’Ivoire to the global report.
Speaking at the event, Yvette Kouassy, Director of the DCSPA, highlighted the strategic importance of adult education in Côte d’Ivoire’s vision for developing human capital, as outlined in the National Development Plan (PND).
“Adult Learning and Education (ALE) plays a key role in addressing current and future skill challenges while supporting personal development and social cohesion,” she stated.
She recalled that Adult Learning and Education encompasses all programs that allow adults to develop their skills, enhance their knowledge, improve professional qualifications, or retrain for new careers.
Yvette Kouassy urged participants to fully commit to the process, emphasizing that:
“Adult education is a collective responsibility and a promise for the future of our nation. By fully engaging in this process, we contribute to building a more educated, inclusive, and resilient society.”
Created in 1949, CONFINTEA is held every twelve years under the auspices of UNESCO. It promotes adult learning and education worldwide and serves as the foundation for the preparation of GRALE reports.
The most recent edition, CONFINTEA VII, was held in 2022 in Marrakech, Morocco, and led to the adoption of the Marrakech Framework for Action, endorsed by 142 countries, including Côte d’Ivoire. This framework calls for inclusive, equitable, and sustainable learning opportunities for adults across the globe.
