Côte d'Ivoire Launches Circular Economy Strategy to Combat Climate Change (2023-2027)

Abidjan, October 16, 2024 - The Council of Ministers of Côte d'Ivoire has adopted a comprehensive strategy aimed at promoting a circular economy from 2023 to 2027. Government spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly announced that this initiative addresses pressing issues such as deforestation, increasing waste production, and significant greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of its commitment under the Paris Agreement, Côte d'Ivoire aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30.41% by 2030. This target will be achieved through the recovery of 20% of its forest cover and increasing the share of renewable energy in its energy mix to 45% during the same period.

The strategy proposes a production and consumption model that aligns better with environmental sustainability and long-term viability. By 2027, the country aims to position itself as a model for sustainable development and effective climate change mitigation.

The implementation of this strategy will require a total investment of 25.8 billion CFA francs and will involve contributions from various stakeholders, including local authorities, the private sector, and technical and financial partners. This collaborative approach highlights the importance of collective action in addressing climate challenges.

The full details of the strategy are expected to foster greater environmental consciousness and encourage sustainable practices across various sectors in the country.
