The Ivorian government adopted a decree on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the presidential palace in Abidjan-Plateau, mandating the dissolution of all student and pupil unions with syndicalist aims within the country’s educational institutions. This measure is intended to preserve security, public order, and maintain peace and social cohesion within educational spaces.
The government spokesperson, Amadou Coulibaly, who also serves as the Minister of Communication, announced the decision in a statement following the Council of Ministers' meeting. He explained that these associations, particularly those with union-related activities, have engaged in recurring serious misconduct in their operations.
"The operation launched by university authorities to secure residences and campuses has uncovered numerous weapons, such as knives, used to incite disorder on and beyond university campuses," stated the government spokesperson.
This decree is enacted in accordance with Article 22 of Ordinance 2024-368, dated June 12, aiming to ensure long-term stability within the educational environment.
