Land Tenure Security in Mining Areas: A Workshop Opens Pathways to Solutions

The Rural Land Agency (AFOR) organized a workshop on November 27 and 28, 2025, in Abidjan to explore appropriate approaches for ensuring land tenure security in mining zones.

This multi-stakeholder dialogue, guided by several experts, aimed to anticipate the challenges arising from the large-scale issuance of land certificates in areas where mining activities are conducted.

During the opening ceremony, AFOR Director General Bamba Cheick Daniel recalled that the workshop is part of a pluralistic and consensus-driven approach intended to remove obstacles that may hinder the process of securing rural land tenure.

He also emphasized that rural land security is a true pillar of social cohesion, urging all participants to put forward the necessary proposals.

For his part, the Director of Rural Land, Nanakan Ouattara, noted that the issue of land tenure security in mining zones deserves to be addressed with the utmost rigor. He added that this workshop represents an exercise in collective responsibility, involving all stakeholders toward rural communities, economic operators, and future generations.

It is worth noting that this workshop was organized as part of the implementation of recommendations from the latest World Bank mission regarding the supervision of activities under the Rural Land Tenure Security Strengthening Program (PRESFOR).
