Line 1 of the Abidjan Metro: Minister Amadou Koné Updates Local Mayors on Project Progress

On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, local officials from communes affected by the Abidjan Metro Line 1 project were briefed on the progress of the works by the Minister of Transport, Amadou Koné, and his team. The meeting, held at the Autonomous District of Abidjan, was followed by a site visit.

"I can assure you that the work is progressing well. We have all seen an acceleration in the work. We are in the process of relocating the historic railway, the SITARAIL line, which is nearly completed. The earthworks are finished, and we are now preparing to lay the track for Metro Line 1. Pedestrian safety structures are also being built," the minister explained at the end of the site visit. Additionally, a viaduct bridge for the metro is under construction over the Ébrié Lagoon.

The Abidjan Metro Line 1 will serve seven communes in the Abidjan District (Abobo, Adjamé, Plateau, Treichville, Marcory, and Port-Bouët) with 18 stations at launch and 20 stations once completed. The goal is to provide the city with a modern public transportation system capable of accommodating 500,000 passengers per day, reducing traffic congestion, and improving traffic flow.

The metro will connect the north-south axis of Abidjan over 37 km, from Anyama to Port-Bouët. Meanwhile, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will cover the east-west axis over 30 km, between Yopougon and Bingerville. Together, these two projects are expected to transport one million people daily. The minister stated that the objective is to reduce the number of car trips in Abidjan by 200,000 by 2028-2029.

Moreover, the project is expected to have a significant impact on employment, with 2,184 direct jobs created between 2024 and 2025. The number is projected to peak at 3,040 jobs by 2027. During the operational phase, the project is expected to generate 1,350 jobs.

Minister Amadou Koné expressed his gratitude to the mayors of the affected communes, as well as traditional leaders and community chiefs, for their support in the successful implementation of the project.
