Macky Sall Officially Announces Candidacy for UN Secretary-General

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has officially submitted his candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, whose current term, held by António Guterres, ends on December 31, 2026. The nomination was formally presented by Burundi, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the African Union.

According to the UN General Assembly, Macky Sall’s candidacy is now officially registered and will proceed through the established selection process, including consultations and a recommendation by the Security Council before final approval by the General Assembly.

The move gives Sall’s candidacy a continental dimension, aiming to strengthen African representation at the highest level of the organization. The race to succeed António Guterres is unfolding in a complex geopolitical context, where regional balance and the support of Security Council members will be decisive.

Other candidates, including former heads of state and senior international officials, have also announced their intention to run. Analysts note that Macky Sall’s diplomatic experience and continental recognition will be key factors in his campaign.

This announcement marks a significant step in Macky Sall’s international trajectory, having served as President of Senegal from 2012 to 2024 and as Chair of the African Union before pursuing the top post at the United Nations.
