Abidjan, July 3, 2025 – After their remarkable participation in the Mathematics Olympiad held from June 11 to 18, 2025, in Gaborone, Botswana, the Ivorian "Mathematical Elephants" were received this Wednesday, July 3, 2025, in Abidjan-Plateau by the Minister of National Education and Literacy, Mariatou Koné.
A tribute ceremony was organized in their honor on Wednesday at the premises of the Directorate of Exams and Competitions (DECO) to celebrate their success.
The Mathematical Elephants secured third place out of 21 participating countries, following Tunisia (2nd) and South Africa (1st), earning three gold medals and two bronze medals.
The president of the Ivorian Mathematical Society, Saliou Touré, expressed his deep gratitude to Minister Mariatou Koné for her leadership and her efforts to promote scientific subjects. He said, "This success is thanks to you. Without your support to the Mathematical Society and to all mathematicians, these results would not have been possible."
He went on to commend the major reforms initiated since Minister Koné took office, which have helped Côte d’Ivoire rise to the top of international competitions.
As a native of the Bagoué region, he also praised her for her development and transformation efforts in the town of Boundiali.
He also expressed his appreciation to President Alassane Ouattara for his continued support of the education sector and the overall development of the country.
Speaking on behalf of the laureates, Traoré Cartier Saly thanked Minister Mariatou Koné for her commitment to transforming education and promoting mathematics. Through him, the Mathematical Elephants expressed a cherished wish: to inspire other young people.
To further encourage and motivate them, the minister donated computer equipment and cash totaling 10,460,000 CFA francs.
It should be noted that the home schools of the champions also received congratulations from Minister Mariatou Koné. These include the Lycée d'Excellence Alassane Ouattara in Grand-Bassam, Lycée Scientifique in Yamoussoukro, Lycée des Jeunes Filles in Bouaké, and Sainte-Marie in Abidjan.
It is also important to highlight that Côte d’Ivoire will take part in the World Mathematics Championship, which will be held from July 12 to 22, 2025, in Australia. Six of the nation’s young talents will represent the country.
