Proximity Courts: Justice Becomes Closer to the People

The Ivorian government is working to make justice services accessible to all. To achieve this, several new Courts of First Instance are being opened across the country.

San Pedro, located in the southwest of Ivory Coast, has had a new Court of First Instance since February 2023. This infrastructure allows the people of San Pedro and surrounding areas to benefit from justice services close to home.
"The people of San Pedro are happy to welcome this courthouse. We no longer have to travel all the way to Sassandra, more than 2 hours away," explains Achille Gapia, a merchant.
"Things are much faster now," adds Antony Dago, another merchant.

A new Court of First Instance has also been established in Abobo. Its construction responds to the expectations of the local population, particularly in terms of the issuance of legal documents.
"Before the administrative exams, I used to travel all the way to Plateau to get the required documents. I'm happy to have a court in my neighborhood," says Lamine Coulibaly, a student.

Bingerville, a commune in Greater Abidjan, also has a new Court of First Instance since May 2024. Built as part of the Debt Reduction and Development Contract (C2D), this infrastructure covers an area of four hectares.

The opening of these new, modern judicial structures aims to strengthen proximity justice and ensure that citizens from all regions of the country have equitable access to justice.
As of July 2024, there are 12 Courts of First Instance nationwide.
