The Minister of Hydraulics, Sanitation, and Public Hygiene, Bouaké Fofana, inaugurated the wastewater sludge treatment station in Anyama-Yapokoi on Thursday, February 6. The station has a capacity of 300m³ per day.
Built on a 5-hectare plot, the wastewater sludge treatment station in Anyama-Yapokoi includes a drying area of 3,700 m², a storage warehouse of 350 m², an operation building of 60 m², and roadways.
The facility began operation on September 13, 2024, and required an investment of 3.4 billion FCFA. Its construction is part of the Sustainable Improvement Program for Sanitation and Drainage in Abidjan (PADSAD), which has a total cost of 54 billion FCFA.
According to Minister Bouaké Fofana, the goal of the treatment process is to convert the wastewater sludge into easily manageable products that are harmless to public health. "The treated sludge can be used as fertilizer, while the resulting water can be used for irrigation."
This infrastructure dedicated to wastewater sludge treatment aims to reduce human exposure to pathogens (waterborne diseases) while protecting the environment.
The inauguration ceremony also included the presentation of an important set of sanitation equipment to the National Agency for Waste Management (ANAGED) to ensure an effective response to issues related to cleanliness, waste collection, treatment, and recycling.
