Côte d’Ivoire will now host the headquarters of the West African Health Organization (WAHO/OOAS), a strategic institution of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
On mission to Côte d’Ivoire as part of the process to operationalize this decision, the Director-General of WAHO, Dr. Melchior Athanase Joël Codjovi Aïssi, was received on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, by the Minister of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage, Pierre Dimba, for a working session.
The decision to designate Côte d’Ivoire as host country was taken by ECOWAS Heads of State during a meeting held in December 2025. In preparation for the implementation of this resolution, the Director-General of WAHO undertook an official visit to Abidjan to lay the operational groundwork for the institution’s establishment.
Beyond the logistical and administrative aspects of the transition, discussions focused on the major health challenges facing the sub-region. Key priorities highlighted included strengthening epidemiological surveillance, harmonizing pharmaceutical policies, developing resilient health systems, and coordinating responses to public health emergencies. The establishment of the headquarters in Abidjan is expected to enhance coordination in times of health crises and reinforce regional cooperation mechanisms.
For Minister Pierre Dimba, the designation reflects the confidence of ECOWAS member states in Côte d’Ivoire and its leadership in public health matters. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fully support WAHO to ensure a swift installation process and the effective functioning of the new headquarters.
By hosting this strategic regional institution, Abidjan consolidates its position as a regional hub while actively contributing to stronger health solidarity and cooperation within the West African community space.
