On November 30, 2024, the Ministry of Transport, through the Directorate General of Land Transport and Traffic (DGTTC), organized a meeting in Abidjan with delivery workers, couriers, and users of two-wheel and three-wheel vehicles to discuss improving road safety.
According to the Road Safety Office (OSER), in 2023, Côte d'Ivoire recorded 13,310 traffic accidents, resulting in 1,129 fatalities and 18,134 injuries. Notably, two-wheel and three-wheel vehicle users accounted for 37% of the fatalities.
Oumar Sacko, Director General of the DGTTC, emphasized the importance of engaging with delivery workers, couriers, and users of two- and three-wheel vehicles, who are vital to the transportation system. The aim of the meeting was to raise awareness about road civility, promote responsible behavior, and ensure adherence to road traffic laws. It also provided an opportunity to address the concerns of various stakeholders. "This meeting with motorcyclists aims to provide all the necessary information on road safety, especially as we approach the festive season," Sacko noted.
Sacko also revealed that the National Police will launch a large-scale control operation starting Monday, December 2, 2024. The operation will focus on ensuring that motorcyclists wear helmets, have valid documents (including a driving license, road tax sticker, and insurance), and register their vehicles. Motorcyclists are also encouraged to ensure their rearview mirrors are in good condition. This operation will also extend to other road users.
The government's goal for road safety is to reduce road traffic fatalities by 50% by 2030.
