Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé Opens 6th EAA Council of Ministers Session in Yamoussoukro

Yamoussoukro, August 2, 2024 – In a significant move towards addressing Africa's water and sanitation challenges, Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé officially opened the 6th session of the Pan-African Intergovernmental Agency for Water and Sanitation (EAA) Council of Ministers in Yamoussoukro today. His remarks highlighted the urgent need for innovative and adaptable financing mechanisms to support sustainable water and sanitation projects across the continent.

During the session, Mambé emphasized that current financing models must evolve to better meet the needs of long-term sanitation and water access projects. "It is crucial to parameterize the financing mode for water and sanitation," he stated. "These projects should benefit from more favorable financial conditions, including concessionary interest rates and extended loan maturities."

The Prime Minister proposed that sanitation projects, in particular, should be financed over a span of 20 to 40 years. This long-term approach, he argued, is essential for ensuring sustainable improvements and effectively tackling the continent’s sanitation issues. Mambé encouraged the experts present to use their technical expertise to demonstrate the viability of these proposed financing models.

Minister Bouaké Fofana, who is responsible for hydraulics, sanitation, and cleanliness, also reiterated Côte d'Ivoire's commitment to supporting the EAA’s mission. He called on other member countries to engage their governments in reinforcing the institution's vision. "The presence of the Prime Minister at the opening of our session underscores Côte d'Ivoire's dedication," Fofana said. "I urge my colleagues to convince their respective governments to back this vision, which is crucial for advancing our efforts in water and sanitation."

The EAA was established to unite African nations in addressing critical issues related to water and sanitation. The agency focuses on providing advisory support, conducting research on innovative technologies, and implementing actions to ensure equitable and sustainable access to clean water and sanitation services across the continent.

The discussions at this session are expected to lay the groundwork for enhanced collaboration among African states and drive forward the implementation of effective solutions to meet the continent's water and sanitation needs.

As Africa continues to face significant challenges in these areas, the EAA's role in fostering cooperation and innovation is more crucial than ever. The commitment from leaders and experts alike is vital in ensuring that every individual across the continent has access to safe water and adequate sanitation.
