Côte d’Ivoire: Craftsmanship, an Economic Pillar That Needs Structuring to Boost Its Performance
A sector of undeniable vitality, Ivorian craftsmanship is now positioned as a key driver of the national economy. Contributing 19.5% to the GDP in 2022, it recorded a 124% increase in added value over seven years—from 3,855.7 billion CFA francs in 2015 to 8,653.5 billion CFA francs in 2022. This impressive growth highlights the structural role of this sector, which is rich in tradition and full of employment potential.
Speaking at the weekly “Tout Savoir Sur” (TSS) forum hosted by the Government Information and Communication Center (CICG), Mr. Yao Silvère Konan, Director General for the Promotion of SMEs and Handicrafts, urged actors in the sector to formalize their businesses. This requirement, established by the 2014 law, mandates registration in the National Trade Registry—a prerequisite to benefit from various government support mechanisms.
Indeed, compliant artisans can apply for funding through platforms such as the Youth Employment Agency or the GUDE-PME, helping to strengthen their production capacity and competitiveness.
Ivorian craftsmanship comprises 245 trades, grouped into eight major branches: agri-food, construction, metal and mechanics, wood and furniture, textiles and leather, audiovisual and communication, hygiene and personal care, as well as art and decoration. While predominantly male-dominated, the sector includes 22.5% women, underscoring the need for greater inclusion of female artisans and entrepreneurs.
Recognizing the sector's strategic importance, the Government has made its promotion a top priority in successive National Development Plans (2012–2015, 2016–2020, and 2021–2025). This proactive policy aims to further structure the sector, modernize it, and increase its visibility both regionally and internationally.
Beyond formalization, the real challenge now lies in integrating new technologies and gaining access to digital markets—key conditions for sustainable and inclusive growth in this emblematic sector of Côte d’Ivoire’s economic and cultural identity.
