Tongon Gold Mine: Over One Billion CFA Francs Cheque Awarded to Fund Community Projects in Impacted Villages

Abidjan, August 31, 2025 – A cheque exceeding one billion CFA francs was handed over to support community development projects in villages affected by the Tongon gold mine. This significant event took place during the official installation ceremony of the Local Mining Development Committee (CDLM), presided over by Cissé Sabati, Inspector General at the Ministry of Mines, Petroleum, and Energy, on August 30, 2025, in Tongon, M'Bengué department.

In his speech, Cissé Sabati praised the commitment of the Tongon gold mine and emphasized the importance of establishing the CDLM as a vital tool for local development, governance, and citizen participation in mining-related issues.

The establishment of the Tongon CDLM marks a new chapter for local communities, promising better redistribution of wealth generated by mining activities. The funds will be directed towards key projects including educational and healthcare infrastructure, water drilling, and economic empowerment initiatives.

Aboudramane Coulibaly, 6th Vice President of the Poro Regional Council, reiterated the Head of State’s determination to make the mining sector a true driver of shared growth benefiting populations directly affected by natural resource exploitation.

“The installation of this CDLM is a crucial step. It reflects our commitment to working hand in hand with administrative authorities and communities to build a sustainable and equitable future,” declared Dénise N'Gom, speaking on behalf of the Tongon gold mine’s general management.

It is important to note that the CDLM is both a consultative and decision-making body. This installation aligns with the strict enforcement of the Ivorian Mining Code, which allocates a portion of mining revenues to improving the living conditions of local populations through transparent and participatory mechanisms.
