China hands over $56.5 million ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja

China has officially handed over a new headquarters building to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a $56.5 million facility aimed at strengthening regional integration and institutional capacity across West Africa.

The building, dubbed the “Eye of West Africa,” was delivered during a formal ceremony in Abuja and is part of China’s ongoing infrastructure cooperation with the regional bloc.

The modern complex is designed to host administrative offices and conference facilities for ECOWAS, which brings together 15 West African countries to promote economic cooperation and political integration.

According to officials, the project is intended to improve the efficiency of the organization’s operations while providing upgraded infrastructure to support decision-making and regional coordination.

The new headquarters was financed by the Chinese government as part of broader development cooperation initiatives across Africa, where China has invested heavily in infrastructure, transport, and institutional buildings over the past two decades.

ECOWAS plays a central role in regional economic policies, trade integration, and peace and security efforts in West Africa, a region that continues to face political instability and economic development challenges.

The inauguration of the facility comes as West African states seek to deepen cooperation in areas such as trade facilitation, infrastructure development, and regional security coordination.

The building is expected to serve as a key administrative hub for the bloc’s activities in the coming years.
