On the fourth day of the crisis shaking the Middle East, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Côte d’Ivoire, H.E. Seyed Gholamreza Meigoni, held a press conference on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. He called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to mobilize in order to prevent regional escalation.
The Ambassador stated that on February 28, 2026, several sites in Iran were targeted by military strikes at a time when diplomatic discussions were ongoing regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He recalled that the Islamic Republic of Iran had participated in a new round of negotiations in Geneva on February 26, and that technical meetings were scheduled in Vienna to continue the discussions.
H.E. Seyed Gholamreza Meigoni emphasized that Iran remains committed to the international legal framework, particularly the provisions of the United Nations Charter. He reaffirmed that his country considers itself to be exercising its right to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter, while stressing that the priority remains the preservation of regional stability.
Addressing the nuclear issue, he noted that Iran is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and that its facilities are subject to monitoring mechanisms provided for under international agreements. He also referred to the 2015 agreement, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), stating that the difficulties encountered in its implementation have contributed to the current tensions.
The Ambassador further urged the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to fully play its role in preventing escalation and promoting dialogue. He indicated that his country has requested an emergency meeting to review the situation and encourage a solution consistent with international law.
He stressed that Iran places great importance on good neighborly relations and does not intend to undermine the stability of countries in the region. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to mutual respect, state sovereignty, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.
“The question today is the place of diplomacy in the international system,” he declared, expressing the hope that dialogue and multilateral mechanisms would regain their full effectiveness.
According to him, these developments have significantly affected the diplomatic momentum that had been underway. He also expressed his country’s concern over the human and material consequences of the strikes, referring to civilian casualties, including women and children, and recalling the principles of international law relating to state sovereignty and the protection of populations.
H.E. Seyed Gholamreza Meigoni finally assured that the Islamic Republic of Iran remains committed to defending its territorial integrity and sovereignty, while calling for collective responsibility to preserve regional and international peace and security.
