Justin Katinan Koné, the 4th Vice-President of the African Peoples' Party  Côte d'Ivoire (PPA-CI), has been remanded in custody following a judicial hearing connected to post-election unrest during the 2025 electoral period, according to reporting by InCôtedIvoire.net.

A statement released on Friday, September 11, 2026, by the Public Prosecutor at the Abidjan Court of First Instance confirmed that Koné was questioned by investigators from the Central Police Headquarters following a legal complaint filed by the ruling Rassemblement des Houphouëtistes pour la Démocratie et la Paix (RHDP).

The complaint, submitted on September 7, 2026, alleges defamation, public insult via information systems, and the dissemination of false news. Following initial hearings of both the plaintiff and the accused, the Public Prosecutor requested the file be referred to the Correctional Court.

However, judicial proceedings extended beyond the initial complaint. Police officers were also instructed to interrogate the senior PPA-CI official regarding his alleged involvement in violent disruptions during the 2025 election cycle, covered extensively in InCôtedIvoire Politics & Governance.

Upon conclusion of his interrogation, Justin Katinan Koné was placed in police custody before being transferred to the Anti-Terrorism Division of the Abidjan Court. A formal judicial investigation was opened, resulting in a remand warrant (mandat de dépôt).

The Prosecutor’s office listed multiple severe charges, including:

• Acts of terrorism
• Attacks and conspiracy against state authority
• Participation in an insurrectional movement
• Breach of public order and incitement to crime
• Armed and unarmed unlawful assembly
• Organization of and participation in unauthorized public demonstrations

The prosecution also cited alleged arson involving private and commercial vehicles across Abidjan and national territory.

These legal proceedings are grounded in Law No. 2024-360 of June 11, 2024, on anti-terrorism enforcement, alongside provisions of the Ivorian Penal Code. The Public Prosecutor’s office recalled a previous statement dated October 24, 2025, reiterating that electoral violence would not go unpunished and that all perpetrators, accomplices, and sponsors regardless of their political status would face prosecution.
