Côte d’Ivoire: Protests Banned Ahead of Presidential Election

Tensions are rising in Côte d’Ivoire as the October 25 presidential election approaches. On Thursday, October 2, the National Security Council announced a ban on all demonstrations against the exclusion of opposition candidates.

The decision follows the release of the final list of candidates by the Constitutional Council, with no possibility of appeal.

Authorities cite concerns over potential unrest fueled by hate speech and misinformation circulating since the announcement. More than 44,000 security personnel will be deployed to ensure a safe election, including joint patrols in urban areas.

Despite the ban, two major opposition parties had planned a march on Saturday to demand an inclusive dialogue. However, the authorities prohibited the demonstration, citing a high risk of public disorder.
