Côte d’Ivoire: Simone Gbagbo’s Generations Capables Movement Charts Its Path Toward 2025

Abidjan, July 2025 — Founded in September 2021 and officially transformed into a political party in August 2022, the Generations Capables Movement (MGC) is now asserting itself as one of the most active opposition forces ahead of Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential election scheduled for October 2025. Led by former First Lady Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, the MGC aims to offer a political alternative grounded in ethics, national sovereignty, and social justice.

A Mission Focused on the Citizen

The MGC’s stated mission is clear: to shape a new Ivorian citizen—conscious of their rights and responsibilities, and guided by values such as integrity, competence, solidarity, and patriotism. The party seeks to break with past political practices and invest in education and leadership training, especially among the youth, to foster a new generation of responsible leaders.

“We want to build a sovereign, reconciled, and prosperous nation. That starts with men and women transformed in the way they think and act,” Simone Gbagbo declared at a recent rally in Yopougon.

A Vision of Reform and Renewal

The MGC defines itself as a humanist, social-democratic, and sovereignist party. It advocates for deep institutional reforms, particularly of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI), which it believes should be more representative and truly independent.

The party also calls for a more inclusive process of national reconciliation—one that addresses the needs of victims of past political crises, political prisoners, and exiled citizens.

Political and Economic Goals

Among its core priorities, the MGC emphasizes:

  • Reforming the electoral system, with a CEI “recruited through a public call for applications and independent from political parties”;

  • Improving living conditions by addressing the high cost of living, youth unemployment, and access to healthcare;

  • Developing a sovereign national economy focused on the local transformation of raw materials;

  • Overhauling the education and healthcare systems, which it views as pillars of a just and equitable society.

Ongoing Organizational Development

With a presence in several regions of the country—including popular districts of Abidjan such as Yopougon—the MGC continues to strengthen its grassroots structures. The party claims an active and organized support base, although analysts note that it still faces challenges in competing with major established parties like the RHDP and PPA-CI.

Nevertheless, political observers point out that Simone Gbagbo retains strong symbolic influence, particularly among segments of the youth, religious communities, and former supporters of the FPI (Ivorian Popular Front).

On the Road to 2025

Officially nominated as the MGC’s presidential candidate in November 2024, Simone Gbagbo is preparing for a competitive electoral landscape. She will face political heavyweights such as Laurent Gbagbo and representatives of the late Henri Konan Bédié.

The MGC is banking on a platform of political renewal, emphasizing justice, public ethics, and the recovery of national sovereignty.

A Party to Watch

With less than a year before the election, the Generations Capables Movement is working to expand its appeal beyond its core supporters. If it succeeds in broadening its base, building strategic alliances, and maintaining a consistent message, it could become a significant player in the upcoming vote.
