Yopougon, July 5, 2025 – The Generations Capables Movement (MGC), led by former First Lady Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, held the 3rd edition of its “Festival of Freedoms” this Saturday, July 5, 2025, at the BAE Stadium in Yopougon. Centered around the themes of peace, justice, and national sovereignty, this political and civic gathering drew thousands of party members, supporters, and curious citizens from across Abidjan and various parts of the country.
The event featured artistic performances, speeches by party officials, and a much-anticipated address by MGC President Simone Ehivet Gbagbo. In her remarks, she reaffirmed her commitment to fundamental freedoms, national reconciliation, and deep institutional reforms particularly of the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) ahead of the 2025 presidential election.
“Democracy cannot fully function without guaranteed freedoms, fair justice, and an electoral commission that is truly independent from political parties,” she declared to an enthusiastic crowd."
Officially established as a political party in August 2022, the MGC positions itself as an opposition force to the ruling majority. The party promotes a political line that is social-democratic, humanist, and sovereignist. According to its leaders, this festival is meant to create a space for public expression and to restore citizens' confidence in political life.
In an interview, Marie-Claire Kouadio, MGC coordinator in Yopougon, stated, “This celebration is an act of peaceful resistance and political education for the youth.”
With less than a year until the presidential election scheduled for October 2025, the timing of this festival is significant. It is part of a broader effort by the MGC to mobilize and increase its visibility across the country. In November 2024, Simone Gbagbo was officially nominated as the party’s presidential candidate.
However, according to some political analysts, the MGC still faces major challenges, including limited grassroots presence, a lack of solid alliances with other opposition parties, and an image that needs rebuilding among segments of the population.
The event was held under tight security, with law enforcement present throughout. No major incidents were reported, and local authorities confirmed that the event proceeded without disruptions.
According to MGC members, this festival goes beyond partisan politics. They say it is meant to “celebrate freedom as the foundation of any democratic society.”
