The government denies any UN injunction regarding the registration of Tidjane Thiam

Abidjan, July 30, 2025 (AIP) – On Wednesday, July 30, 2025, the Ivorian government, through its spokesperson Amadou Coulibaly, clarified the interpretations circulating in the media regarding an alleged injunction from the United Nations Human Rights Commission concerning the registration of the President of the Democratic Party of Côte d'Ivoire (PDCI), Tidjane Thiam, on the electoral roll.

According to Mr. Coulibaly, the UN’s verbal note was misinterpreted or even deliberately distorted for political purposes. “The note is very clear to those who actually received and read it. It rejects the request for provisional measures aiming to impose Mr. Thiam’s registration on the electoral list,” he stated.

The government spokesperson accused the lawyer of the PDCI president of media manipulation to “satisfy his client’s expectations.”

However, he affirmed that Mr. Thiam’s political rights are fully guaranteed. “He is the president of the PDCI, he freely exercises his functions, and his movements are not hindered in any way,” he added.

The minister also emphasized that the UN note indicates that no final decision has yet been made on the merits of the case and that the Commission is awaiting official comments from Côte d'Ivoire by January 8, 2026, before making a ruling.
