Côte d’Ivoire: Tiémoko Meyliet Koné represents Ouattara at African Union summit in Luanda

Côte d’Ivoire’s Vice President Tiémoko Meyliet Koné represented President Alassane Ouattara at the African Union’s 21st extraordinary session in Luanda, Angola, where African leaders focused on strengthening the continent’s ability to prevent and manage conflicts.

The summit, held on August 29 and 30, adopted the Luanda Action Plan on Conflict Prevention, aimed at strengthening African mechanisms for anticipating and preventing crises before they escalate.

Speaking on behalf of Côte d’Ivoire, Koné called for a more preventive and forward-looking approach to conflict management, arguing that African mechanisms must be better adapted to the continent’s evolving security and political realities.

His participation also highlighted Côte d’Ivoire’s broader diplomatic engagement on peace and stability issues across Africa.

On the sidelines of the summit, Koné met with Angolan President João Lourenço to discuss relations between Côte d’Ivoire and Angola and opportunities to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Lourenço also cited Côte d’Ivoire as an example of a country that has prioritised peace and stability while focusing on economic development and improving living conditions.

The Luanda summit comes as African countries face a complex security environment marked by armed conflicts, political instability and growing pressure on regional peace mechanisms.

For Côte d’Ivoire, the message from Luanda was clear: preventing conflicts before they erupt must become a stronger pillar of Africa’s approach to peace and security.
