The African Development Bank (AfDB) is strengthening its support for Ghana’s rice sector through funding aimed at improving the competitiveness of the industry and reducing the country’s reliance on imports.

Through its support for rice value chain development in West Africa, the AfDB seeks to increase farmers’ productivity, improve access to quality seeds, strengthen processing capacity and boost the marketing of locally produced rice.

Ghana has been working for several years to increase domestic rice production in order to meet growing local demand and reduce the impact of imports on its economy. Despite ongoing efforts, the country continues to face challenges linked to agricultural yields, processing infrastructure and market access.

The support is part of regional initiatives aimed at developing more resilient rice value chains across West Africa, with the goal of improving food security and strengthening the continent’s agricultural independence.

For Ghanaian authorities, building a competitive rice industry is a strategic priority as the country seeks to boost local production, create jobs in the agricultural sector and gradually reduce its food import bill.
