Côte d’Ivoire: Laurent Gbagbo’s Party Suspends Participation in Electoral Commission

In Côte d’Ivoire, former President Laurent Gbagbo’s party has suspended the participation of its representative in the Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) until further notice.

The announcement was made in a statement released on April 11, 2025 — exactly 14 years after Gbagbo’s fall from power.

Six months ahead of the presidential election, the opposition leader accuses the CEI of violating its own rules to serve the interests of the ruling power. Gbagbo is calling for a “genuine political dialogue” to “bring Côte d’Ivoire back onto the path of credible, inclusive, and peaceful elections.”

It’s worth noting that the former head of state has been removed from the electoral roll since 2020 due to a criminal conviction, which currently bars him from running in the presidential race.
