According to Jeune Afrique's publication on August 5, 2025, the Head of State, Alassane Ouattara, and his predecessor, Laurent Gbagbo, spoke by phone at the end of July. It was their first direct conversation since February 2024, after over a year of communicating only through intermediaries.
The pan-African media outlet reports that the two leaders had not spoken directly for nearly a year and a half.
Jeune Afrique adds that a few days after his return from France on July 16, President Ouattara called former President Laurent Gbagbo to check in on him and propose a meeting to discuss the country’s political situation.
