Presidential Election in Ivory Coast: Former First Lady Simone Ehivet Nominated as Candidate by Her Party

With less than a year to go before the presidential election in Ivory Coast, Simone Ehivet, the ex-wife of former president Laurent Gbagbo, is officially a candidate. She was nominated from her party, the Movement of Capable Generations (MGC), on Saturday, November 30, 2024, two years after its creation, in Moossou, the hometown of the former First Lady.

Several hundred MGC supporters gathered under tents, all with one goal: to support Simone Ehivet, like these two militants.
“She is a fighter. She has proven herself for the Republic of Ivory Coast alongside her former husband. She must reach power so that the whole world knows that women can lead,” said one.
“She has good ideas. And we want her to put those ideas to the service of Ivory Coast,” added the other.

After several hours of waiting, the candidate finally appeared. Alongside her at the podium were opposition leaders, including a vice-president of the PDCI-RDA party and the leader of the Cojep, Charles Blé Goudé, who is currently ineligible.

Food Sovereignty, Industrialization
“I speak to you with my heart,” said the MGC candidate. In her 30-minute speech, Simone Ehivet outlined her priorities: national reconciliation through an amnesty, food sovereignty, industrialization, and the introduction of mandatory military and civic services.

Speaking to the press, Simone Ehivet discussed her upcoming presidential campaign. “I’m sure that by the time of the election, there will be rapprochements,” she said. Regarding a potential alliance with Laurent Gbagbo, she stated, “He is a political figure. We will discuss if it is possible.”

Simone Ehivet has less than a year to convince.
