AFCON 2025: In a Breath-Stealing Final, Senegal Denies Morocco a Historic Home Title

Some matches transcend football. Others rewrite history.

The Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final, played in Rabat, did both.

In an unbearably tense, emotionally charged and almost unreal encounter, Senegal stunned host nation Morocco with a dramatic 1–0 victory after extra time, silencing the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium and shattering Moroccan hopes of lifting the continental trophy on home soil.

This was not just a final.
It was a war of nerves, courage, chaos and destiny.

A Final Nobody Could Have Predicted

Few imagined such a scenario for a match of this magnitude. A packed stadium, a host nation dreaming of glory 50 years after its only AFCON triumph, and a Senegalese side determined to assert its dominance on African football once again.

From the opening whistle, the intensity was suffocating.

Senegal Take Control Early

The first half belonged largely to the Lions of Teranga. Calm on the ball, disciplined defensively and razor-sharp in transitions, Senegal imposed their rhythm despite relentless pressure from the Moroccan crowd.

The clearest chance of the half came in the 38th minute, when Iliman Ndiaye broke through the Moroccan defense and found himself one-on-one with Yassine Bounou. The stadium held its breath — but the Sevilla goalkeeper produced a sensational save with his foot to keep Morocco alive.

Morocco Respond, Drama Erupts

After the break, the momentum shifted. Morocco emerged with renewed aggression, pushing higher and creating several dangerous situations, but failing to convert their chances.

Then came the first explosion.

Deep into stoppage time, Ismaïla Sarr headed the ball into the net following a flick-on by Abdoulaye Seck. Senegal celebrated wildly — but their joy was short-lived. The referee, Ndala Ngambo of DR Congo, had already whistled for a foul on Achraf Hakimi moments earlier. The goal was disallowed.

Tension skyrocketed.

A Scene Rarely Seen in Football History

As the match edged toward extra time, Morocco earned a late corner. In the chaos inside the box, Brahim Díaz went down and immediately demanded a foul.

The referee was summoned to the VAR screen.

What followed was surreal.

After a lengthy review, the decision came: Penalty for Morocco.

The Senegalese players erupted in protest. Emotions boiled over.
And then — the unthinkable — Senegal left the pitch.

For over 15 minutes, the match was suspended amid confusion and outrage. It took the leadership of Sadio Mané, Senegal’s captain and talisman, to bring his teammates back and restore order.

Penalty Missed… Destiny Chosen

Brahim Díaz stepped up himself.

The stadium roared. History was within reach.

He attempted a Panenka.

It failed.

Édouard Mendy, calm and unshaken, caught the ball with ease. The Moroccan dream crumbled in that very moment.

Football had chosen its side.

Extra Time: Senegal Strike, Rabat Freezes

Having survived the storm, Senegal struck back with fury.

In the 94th minute, Pape Gueye, driven by rage and belief, surged forward and unleashed a thunderous strike from distance. The ball smashed into the roof of the net, leaving Bounou helpless.

A Senegalese “cold shower” descended upon Rabat.
1–0. Silence. Shock. History in the making.

Morocco’s Last Stand Falls Short

Morocco threw everything forward in desperation. Ironically, Bounou — already beaten — prevented an even heavier defeat with a heroic double save in the 111th minute.

But it was not enough.

At the final whistle, Senegal had done the unthinkable.

Senegal, Kings of Africa Once Again

By denying Morocco a home triumph, the Lions of Teranga etched their names into African football folklore. A victory built on resilience, unity, mental strength and sheer belief.

For Morocco, the wait continues.
For Senegal, glory reigns supreme.

This final will be remembered not only for its scoreline, but for its madness, drama, controversy and courage.

An irrespirable match?
The word is an understatement.
