Côte d’Ivoire Boosts Agricultural Production and Food Security Through Government Support Programs
The government is implementing several programmes aimed at strengthening food security, combating the high cost of living, and improving the living and working conditions of actors in the agricultural sector.
In Ferkessédougou, a cooperative of around one hundred women vegetable producers receives annual support in agricultural equipment, seeds, and fertilizers under the Social Government Programme Support Project (PA-PSGouv).
The group has also been provided with water towers, three boreholes, an irrigation system, and a tricycle, significantly improving their working conditions.
“Illnesses like fertilizers are very expensive here. Not having to buy them anymore is a huge relief. Having water directly on our site is also a major advantage. We no longer need to spend money on fuel to rent farmland elsewhere; everything is now available on our own plot,” said the cooperative’s president, Christine Yéo.
In Kohourou, a locality located 10 km from Aboisso, members of the Solafia group have been producing rice since 2022.
The association benefits from the support of the Regional Council of Sud-Comoé and the Ministry of Agriculture through the Emergency Food Production Programme (2PAU-CI).
Thanks to this support, production increased from 1 ton to more than 20 tons of rice in 2025.
“We received equipment, fertilizers, and seeds to cultivate 14 hectares. Thanks to this, we won the award for the best agricultural group in the region in 2023 and received a mini power tiller,” said Karim Koné, the group’s president.
According to government reports, total food crop production increased from 11,495,419 tonnes in 2011 to 23,654,675 tonnes in 2024, while milled rice production rose from 550,000 tonnes to 1,547,734 tonnes over the same period.
