Côte d’Ivoire accelerates value-added growth as cashew processing reaches record levels

Côte d’Ivoire is making significant progress in its drive to transform its agricultural sector, with the cashew industry emerging as one of the country’s most notable industrial success stories.

The world's largest producer of raw cashew nuts generated more than 1 trillion CFA francs in export revenues in 2025 while increasing its local processing rate to 43%, according to official sector data. The achievement marks a major step forward in the country's strategy to capture more value from its agricultural resources and reduce dependence on raw commodity exports.

For decades, Côte d’Ivoire exported the vast majority of its cashew production in raw form, primarily to Asian markets where the nuts were processed before being sold globally. Today, authorities are pursuing a different model focused on industrial transformation, job creation and higher domestic value addition.

The country produced approximately 1.5 million tonnes of raw cashew nuts in 2025, maintaining its position as the world’s leading producer. At the same time, investments in processing facilities have enabled a growing share of production to be transformed locally, creating opportunities across the industrial value chain.

Government officials view the sector as a key component of Côte d’Ivoire’s broader economic transformation agenda. By expanding local processing capacity, the country aims to strengthen industrialisation, increase export earnings and create sustainable employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas where cashew production plays a vital economic role.

The expansion of processing activities has attracted both domestic and international investors seeking to benefit from rising global demand for cashew products. New factories and industrial zones dedicated to agro-processing have contributed to the sector's rapid growth, while supportive government policies have encouraged further investment.

Industry experts say the increase in local processing capacity represents a significant shift in the structure of the Ivorian economy. Rather than relying solely on the export of raw agricultural commodities, the country is increasingly moving toward value-added manufacturing and agro-industrial development.

The success of the cashew sector also highlights Côte d’Ivoire’s ambition to diversify its economic base beyond traditional exports. Alongside developments in energy, mining and infrastructure, agro-industrial transformation has become a central pillar of the country's long-term growth strategy.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. Maintaining competitiveness, improving logistics, securing access to international markets and ensuring a stable supply of raw materials will be critical to sustaining growth in the sector.

Nevertheless, the latest figures underline the remarkable transformation underway. With more than 1 trillion CFA francs in revenues and a record processing rate of 43%, Côte d’Ivoire is increasingly positioning itself not only as a leading agricultural producer but also as a rising agro-industrial powerhouse in Africa.

As global investors continue to search for high-growth opportunities across emerging markets, the country's expanding cashew industry offers a clear example of how value addition can drive economic development and strengthen industrial competitiveness.
