Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé has called on young agricultural students to focus on livestock farming, a promising sector for Côte d’Ivoire. The country currently imports approximately 600 billion FCFA annually in fishery and animal products, with 120 to 150 billion FCFA attributed to animal production.

Speaking on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the official opening of the 3rd SELAB Livestock Show at the Abidjan Port-Bouët Exhibition Center, the Prime Minister emphasized the theme of this year’s summit: “Maximize Your Livestock Farming Returns.”

“I appeal to young people in agricultural, livestock, and vocational training schools to consider livestock farming, which represents a sector of the future. Dear students, you have chosen a very promising path,” said Robert Beugré Mambé.

Highlighting the economic potential, he added, “In Côte d’Ivoire, this sector offers opportunities worth 600 billion FCFA. Moreover, it provides over 100,000 direct jobs and 500,000 indirect jobs.” He encouraged students to take their studies seriously to contribute effectively to this growing industry.

The Prime Minister also reassured stakeholders that Côte d’Ivoire is a country rich in potential and opportunities, striving for self-sufficiency in animal production.

Minister of Animal and Fishery Resources, Sidi Tiémoko Touré, described SELAB 2024 as “a true hub for exchange, a catalyst for innovation, and a celebration of the richness of this sector.” He announced that participants would explore innovations, including advancements in genetics, animal nutrition, and farm management. The event will also feature competitions and awards for top-performing livestock farmers.

This year’s SELAB aims to promote the adoption of innovative and sustainable livestock farming practices to enhance rural community autonomy and ensure lasting food security. The summit gathers 400 exhibitors, 15 panels, 40 interprofessional organizations, 50,000 visitors, and 60 animal species over three days.

Brazil, the world’s leading animal production exporter, is the country of honor, represented by Suarez Cléber Oliveira, the Deputy Minister for Africa at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. France is the guest country.
