In 2024, Burkina Faso recorded a stock of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of 2,336.3 billion CFA francs, down 5% compared to 2023, according to official BCEAO data. Despite this overall decline, one notable fact stands out: Côte d’Ivoire has established itself as the top African investor in Burkina Faso, holding 12% of FDI, and ranks second globally, just behind Canada (22.9%).
This economic dynamism contrasts with the diplomatic tensions that marked 2024. Since the 2022 coup in Burkina Faso, relations with Côte d’Ivoire have been punctuated by mutual accusations of destabilization. While political relations between Ouagadougou and Abidjan have faced turbulence, Ivorian investments in Burkina Faso demonstrate remarkable economic resilience.
The economy seems to disregard political upheavals. Ivorian companies continue to invest in key sectors, particularly gold mining, which remains the main attraction for FDI in Burkina Faso. This paradox illustrates a well-known African reality: economic interests can transcend diplomatic disagreements.
In December 2025, the two countries began a return to dialogue. A meeting between foreign ministers in Ouagadougou laid the groundwork for renewed cooperation. This political rapprochement could further strengthen economic exchanges, which remain robust despite tensions.
Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso share more than a border: a common history, intense migratory flows, and growing economic interdependence. The Abidjan-Ouagadougou corridor is vital for Burkinabe imports, and Ivorian companies find a dynamic and expanding market there.
While security and political challenges persist, economic pragmatism seems to prevail. Ivorian investors, far from withdrawing, are consolidating their presence, proving that regional cooperation can survive diplomatic crises.
The year 2024 will be remembered for its paradoxes: political tension but economic stability. Côte d’Ivoire, as the leading African investor in Burkina Faso, embodies this duality. If diplomatic relations normalize, this partnership could become a model of resilience and regional integration in West Africa.
