In Côte d’Ivoire, the French group CMA CGM officially launched, on Thursday, April 23, the activities of its regional office in Abidjan, confirming its ambition to make Côte d’Ivoire a key hub for its operations across the African continent.
The French shipping and logistics giant is taking a major strategic step in Africa.
For Rodolphe Saadé, this choice is not accidental. “Abidjan was a natural choice,” he said, highlighting the country’s economic dynamism, sustained growth, and the quality of its human resources. Through this establishment, the group intends to manage from Abidjan all its activities covering West, East, and Southern Africa — a historic first for CMA CGM on the continent.
A strong signal for Côte d’Ivoire’s attractiveness
The opening of this regional office sends a strong signal of confidence from international investors in Côte d’Ivoire. Received by President Alassane Ouattara, the group’s CEO praised the support of Ivorian authorities, which has been key in facilitating its expansion.
In a context of rapid transformation of global trade, Abidjan’s strategic location, combined with the gradual modernization of its infrastructure, makes it an ideal hub for major shipping companies.
Investments and long-term vision
Beyond its institutional presence, CMA CGM clearly signals its intentions: to support the development of the Port of Abidjan, the country’s main economic engine. The group is considering, in the long term, participating in the operation of the container terminal, while advocating for continuous modernization of equipment to handle growing maritime traffic.
In the short term, the company is already proposing practical solutions to improve port operations, including contributing to terminal decongestion through bonded logistics areas.
The bet on Ivorian human capital
Beyond infrastructure, the group’s strategy is strongly focused on human capital. Rodolphe Saadé emphasized the need to promote strong local management, moving away from traditional expatriate-based models.
“There is no reason to systematically rely on expatriates,” he stated, advocating for major investment in training and the development of African talent. This vision is supported by the group’s internal academy, Tangram, based in Marseille.
The goal is clear: to see Ivorian executives gradually take over the management of the group’s regional operations.
Abidjan, a future African logistics hub
With this new establishment, CMA CGM reinforces its long-term commitment to Africa and positions Abidjan as a central hub for its activities. For Côte d’Ivoire, this move strengthens its status as a regional logistics hub and enhances its economic attractiveness.
In a world where supply chains are becoming increasingly strategic, the partnership between Côte d’Ivoire and a global player of this scale opens new perspectives for growth, employment, and innovation.
