Cameroon launches operational phase of Kribi Hydrocarbons Terminal project

The Société camerounaise des dépôts pétroliers (SCDP) and the Port Authority of Kribi (PAK) have officially launched the operational phase of the future Kribi Hydrocarbons Terminal (THK), a major strategic energy infrastructure project in Central Africa.

The project, approved at the highest level of the Cameroonian presidency, is designed to significantly expand the country’s petroleum storage and distribution capacity, while strengthening Kribi’s role as a regional energy hub.

According to project details confirmed by officials, the first phase of the terminal will provide storage capacity of 140,000 cubic metres of petroleum products and 12,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The infrastructure is designed for future expansion, with total capacity expected to reach 280,000 cubic metres in subsequent phases.

The launch follows a series of technical and institutional milestones, including joint site visits by SCDP and PAK executives and the formalisation of partnerships to advance construction works in the Kribi industrial and port zone.

Authorities say the terminal will leverage Kribi’s deep-water port, which allows access to large tankers, positioning the facility as a key logistics point for fuel imports and distribution across Cameroon and the wider Central African region.

Beyond its national scope, the project is also viewed as part of broader efforts to improve regional energy security and reduce supply chain constraints in the hydrocarbons sector.

While the financial structure of the project has not been fully disclosed, officials have confirmed that presidential approval has been granted for its implementation, marking a decisive step toward execution.

Once operational, the THK is expected to reduce dependency bottlenecks in fuel storage and strengthen Cameroon’s ambition to consolidate Kribi as a strategic energy and industrial hub in Central Africa.
