Côte d’Ivoire Terminal, operator of the 2nd container terminal at the Port of Abidjan, received on July 11, 2025, two new quay cranes (STS) and nine fully electric yard cranes (RTG).
This acquisition increases the operator’s fleet to 8 quay cranes (up from 6) and 27 yard cranes (up from 18), thereby strengthening its handling capacities.
This investment is part of an ongoing effort to enhance operational capabilities in response to the continuous growth in volumes handled, driven by the arrival of vessels capable of transporting up to 24,000 containers and the dynamism of the Ivorian and regional economies. It aims to maintain high handling rates both at the quay and in the container yard while optimizing operational flow.
“Since its commissioning three years ago, Côte d’Ivoire Terminal has consistently played a leading role in port performance. In three years, container traffic at the Port of Abidjan has doubled, increasing from 850,000 to 1,600,000 TEUs. The arrival of this new equipment marks an important milestone in strengthening our capacities, as well as our environmental commitment. These will enable us to better absorb future volumes under optimal conditions, ensuring the satisfaction of all our stakeholders,” said Koen De Backker, CEO of Côte d’Ivoire Terminal.
Furthermore, the receipt of these 100% electric machines aligns with the operator’s environmental strategy. Côte d’Ivoire Terminal is certified “Green Terminal” by Bureau Veritas, recognizing its commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly logistics.
“Port performance is a key lever to support the economic growth of Côte d’Ivoire and the sub-region. With this new equipment, the Port of Abidjan positions itself firmly as a modern logistics platform, capable of handling increased volumes under optimal conditions. This sends a strong signal to the entire maritime and port community of our ambition to become a leading logistics hub in West Africa,” stated Hien SIE, Director General of the Autonomous Port of Abidjan.
Additionally, Côte d’Ivoire Terminal plans to receive 16 new tractors soon to enhance container transfer between the yard and the quay. Another 850 additional plugs for refrigerated containers (reefers) will also be installed to meet the growing needs of the agri-food sector and temperature-controlled logistics.
