JIP2I 2024: Minister Souleymane Diarrassouba Announces Submission of 4 New Ivorian Products for Labeling

On Monday, December 16, 2024, in Abidjan-Plateau, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Souleymane Diarrassouba, announced the submission for labeling of four Ivorian products: Danané rice, Korhogo handmade cloth, Kent mangoes from the savannahs, and shea butter from the north. This announcement highlights the government’s commitment to promoting local products and supporting economic development at the local level.

Minister Souleymane Diarrassouba made this statement at the opening of the third edition of the Ivorian Intellectual Property and Innovation Days (JIP2I 2024), which is themed: "Labeling through Geographical Indications, a Tool for Promoting Local Products, Preserving Biological and Cultural Diversity, and a Powerful Lever for Local Development."

The JIP2I 2024 event runs until December 18. Its aim is to foster synergy among the various structures and actors within the Ivorian economic environment, as well as the broader West African and OAPI (African Intellectual Property Organization) space, to better promote local products using geographical indications, collective marks, and certification.

The first day of the JIP2I was also marked by two panels of international experts. The first panel, titled "Geographical Indications as a Tool for Promoting Local Products, Preserving Biological and Cultural Diversity, and Developing Rural Areas," highlighted successful international experiences. The second panel, titled "Successfully Managing a Labeling Project: Registration, Creation of the Producers' Association, Financing, Certification, and Market Launch," detailed the crucial steps in the labeling process, with insights from professionals.

These discussions emphasized the importance of labeling not only for protecting local products but also for preserving cultural and biological heritage, while stimulating the local economy. The submission of new Ivorian products for labeling is a significant step in this process, offering new opportunities for producers and rural communities.

The 2024 edition of JIP2I, organized by the Ivorian Intellectual Property Office (OIPI), is held under the high patronage of the President of the Economic, Social, Environmental, and Social Council (CESEC), Dr. Eugène Aka Aouélé, with the presidency of Minister Souleymane Diarrassouba and co-presidency of Minister of State, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Food Production, Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani.
