Offshore Exploration: Murphy Releases Results from Côte d’Ivoire

The American oil company Murphy Oil Corporation released, on Monday January 19, the results of its first offshore exploration well in Côte d’Ivoire. Drilled in deep waters, the Civette-1X well did not result in a commercially viable discovery, despite confirmed indications of hydrocarbons.

CI-502 Block

The drilling operation reached a depth of approximately 4,250 meters and targeted a geological structure identified as promising based on seismic data. However, the volumes of hydrocarbons encountered were not sufficient to justify an industrial development at this stage.

A Significant Geological Signal

According to Murphy, the results confirm the existence of an active petroleum system in this offshore area of Côte d’Ivoire. This represents an important geological indicator for the continuation of exploration activities within the sedimentary basin.

Exploration: A Long-Term Process

In the oil and gas industry, a non-commercial well does not necessarily represent a failure. Such wells contribute to a better understanding of subsurface geology, help reduce geological uncertainty, and guide future exploration campaigns.

Côte d’Ivoire is therefore continuing, step by step, to assess and map the potential of its offshore resources, in a regional context marked by renewed interest in deepwater exploration.
