Tony Elumelu Named Chairman-Designate of Seplat Energy in Planned Leadership Transition
Seplat Energy has announced a planned leadership transition that will see Nigerian business leader Tony Elumelu take over as chairman of its board in a move aimed at supporting the company’s next phase of growth.
According to a statement released by the company and published through the Nigerian Exchange and financial news platforms, Elumelu has been appointed as chairman-designate of the oil and gas group. He is expected to officially assume the role on January 1, 2027, succeeding current chairman Udoma Udo Udoma.
The appointment forms part of a structured succession plan at one of Nigeria’s leading independent energy companies, as it seeks to strengthen governance and drive its long-term strategic expansion.
Elumelu, one of Africa’s most prominent investors and banking executives, is the founder of Heirs Holdings and chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA). His appointment is expected to reinforce Seplat Energy’s corporate governance and strategic direction at a time when the company is positioning itself for further growth in the upstream oil and gas sector.
The company did not indicate any immediate operational changes following the announcement, emphasizing that the transition will take place in an orderly manner over the coming period.
Market observers note that leadership continuity and experienced board oversight remain critical for energy firms operating in Nigeria’s competitive and capital-intensive oil sector.
Seplat Energy continues to play a significant role in Nigeria’s energy landscape, with a focus on production growth, asset optimization, and long-term value creation for shareholders.
The transition marks a key governance development for the company as it prepares for its next strategic cycle leading into 2030.
