Côte d'Ivoire Has One Doctor for Every 5,697 Inhabitants by End of 2023

According to a statement signed by Dr. Aka Charles Koffi, the director of the cabinet of the Minister of Health, Public Hygiene, and Universal Health Coverage, on May 16, 2024, Côte d'Ivoire had one doctor for every 5,697 inhabitants at the end of 2023.

The communiqué indicates that Côte d'Ivoire has 5,158 doctors for a population of 29,389,150. It specifies that the doctor-to-population ratio is 1 doctor per 10,000 inhabitants according to World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

In terms of paramedical staff, Côte d'Ivoire has 16,065 nurses for its 29,389,150 inhabitants, which equates to 1 nurse for every 1,851 inhabitants in 2023, and 1 midwife for every 832 women of childbearing age.

Regarding medical equipment, before 2011, Côte d'Ivoire only had three scanners in the public sector, located in Gagnoa, Bouaké, and Abidjan. Additionally, there was no MRI machine in any public healthcare facility across the entire national territory.

With the "Solidarity Côte d'Ivoire" program, the country now has 8 MRI machines, 6 of which are outside the capital, and 15 scanners, 10 of which are also outside the capital.

This government clarification follows a press conference by Koné Katinan, a member of the PPA-CI party, who claimed that Côte d'Ivoire has 1 doctor for every 10,000 inhabitants.
