Tiémoko Antoine Assalé, born on December 30, 1975, is a figure of remarkable versatility and dedication, embodying the spirit of justice, integrity, and transformative leadership in Côte d'Ivoire. With a career spanning law, investigative journalism, and politics, Assalé is more than just a man of principles; he is a true architect of change in his nation.
Assalé’s journey began at the University of Cocody in Abidjan, where he earned a Master’s degree in Legal, Administrative, and Political Sciences. His commitment to fighting corruption became evident early on, leading him to challenge the judicial system's integrity through his journalism. In December 2007, Assalé was arrested after publishing an article exposing judicial corruption in a fictional setting. Despite his imprisonment at Abidjan's Maison d'Arrêt et de Correction (MACA) and a 12-month sentence, this period proved transformative rather than defeating.
Instead of being discouraged, Assalé used his incarceration to assist other prisoners as a "legal advisor," helping over 60 inmates secure their release from unjust detention. His dedication to reform was further demonstrated by his influential article, “Maca, le silence des vivants, le cri des morts,” which shed light on the harsh conditions in prison and led to significant improvements in inmate care and facilities.
While in prison, Assalé authored his first book, “Prisonnier en Côte d’Ivoire, j'ai vécu l'enfer de la Maca,” published in December 2009. This work further established him as a relentless advocate for justice and transparency.
Upon his release, Assalé founded L'Éléphant Déchaîné, a highly respected weekly known for its incisive investigations and fearless stance against corruption. His fearless journalism and commitment to integrity have made him a prominent voice in Côte d'Ivoire.
In 2010, Assalé enhanced his leadership skills by participating in the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in the United States. This program broadened his perspective, preparing him for greater roles in leadership and change. His participation in the Crans Montana Forum from 2012 to 2015, where he was recognized as a "New Leader of the Future," further solidified his status as a visionary leader.
Assalé’s political career took a significant turn when he ran for office in 2016 and, despite an initial setback, emerged victorious in the 2018 municipal elections as the mayor of Tiassalé. His tenure has been marked by innovative governance and community-focused development. His election as a deputy in 2021 further extended his influence, bringing his passion for justice and people-centered policies to the National Assembly.
In addition to his political achievements, Assalé has remained deeply involved in his community. He founded the Centre d'Ecoute et de Rencontres de Tiassalé (CREAT), now the Assalé Tiémoko Foundation, which has spearheaded projects like the construction of the Medical Imaging Center at Tiassalé General Hospital, inaugurated in June 2023.
Tiémoko Antoine Assalé’s journey reflects a steadfast commitment to justice, integrity, and a vision for a more equitable Côte d'Ivoire. His latest venture, the political movement AUJOURD’HUI ET DEMAIN, LA CÔTE D’IVOIRE (ADCI), launched in June 2024, advocates for a “Society of Trust” built on education, merit, and anti-corruption. This initiative represents his ongoing dedication to overcoming corruption and promoting genuine values.
With unwavering determination and a heart devoted to public service, Assalé Tiémoko continues to shape the future of Côte d'Ivoire, one chapter at a time.
