Assembled for Africa’s Economic Development: Minister Nialé Kaba Reaffirms Côte d’Ivoire's Commitment to IDA-21 Success

Abidjan, October 9, 2024 – Minister of Economy, Planning, and Development, Nialé Kaba, reaffirmed the Ivorian government’s commitment to the success of the 21st replenishment campaign of the International Development Association (IDA-21), set to take place in December 2024 in Abidjan. Themed “Ending Poverty on a Livable Planet: Driving Impact with Urgency and Ambition,” this initiative aims to secure resources to fight poverty and promote development in low-income countries.

Minister Kaba made her remarks during the opening of the first day of the Assembly for Africa’s Economic Development. The event was co-organized by the World Bank Group, Global Citizen, Bridgewater Associates, and the Ivorian government to support the IDA-21 campaign.

“This Assembly, bringing together key international financial actors, policymakers, the private sector, and civil society, will allow for the exchange of knowledge and ideas. It is by taking up the challenge of resource mobilization for development financing that we can, together, build a prosperous future for our populations,” Nialé Kaba emphasized.

She explained that the Abidjan meeting aims to amplify advocacy: “The ambition is clear – to mobilize at least $120 billion to support the development of the poorest countries, many of which are in Africa.”

Bridgewater Associates' Chairman of the Board, Nir Bar Dea, noted that his institution, along with Global Citizen led by CEO Hugh Evans, "serves as a platform for supporting the World Bank." He added, "Our support aims to lift 250 million people out of poverty in Africa by 2028. Together, we can achieve this, as Africa represents a crossroads that will impact the entire world."

Globally, the objective is to ensure that by 2030, 30% of the people currently living in poverty are lifted out of it, he further explained.

The first day of the Assembly on October 9 also featured panels focused on investment in human capital, infrastructure, Africa's future, and public-private partnerships.
