Energy Governance: Ministry of Energy Launches Mandatory Energy Audits

Abidjan, October 10, 2024 – On behalf of the Minister of Mines, Petroleum, and Energy, Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, Deputy Chief of Staff Souleymane Soro officially launched mandatory energy audits today in Abidjan. This initiative is in line with Decree No. 2016-862, dated November 3, 2016, which sets the terms, conditions, and obligations for implementing energy management measures.

According to Souleymane Soro, domestic energy demand is growing by more than 10% annually. This rapid increase, driven by economic activities and social progress, is putting significant pressure on the balance between energy supply and demand, particularly during peak hours, and is straining the financial stability of the electricity sector, he stated.

The Deputy Chief of Staff emphasized that mandatory energy audits are a crucial solution to the issue of overconsumption of primary energy resources, which are essential for electricity production. This overuse poses a risk to energy security with potentially devastating effects.

Despite having sufficient energy to meet domestic needs and support some neighboring countries through the regional energy exchange system, Côte d'Ivoire recognizes the importance of promoting energy conservation policies to ensure long-term energy security. As explained by the Director-General of Energy, Ehouman Kalifa, the country has made significant progress in its ambition to become the energy hub of the subregion by providing its population with abundant, reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly energy.

Energy audits play a vital role in identifying opportunities for energy savings and improving energy efficiency. By analyzing consumption patterns and identifying areas where energy is being wasted, these audits help reduce both energy costs and the carbon footprint. Moreover, energy audits are a strategic tool for achieving sustainability goals and reducing emissions. By making these audits mandatory, the government promotes responsible resource management, which supports sustainable development.

Both Deputy Chief of Staff Souleymane Soro and Director-General of Energy Ehouman Kalifa expressed the government's gratitude to the European Union and German Cooperation for their financial support in implementing the mandatory energy audits project.
