Abidjan, August 7, 2024 – A logistics support unit from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China, stationed in Djibouti, has been invited by the Ivorian Ministry of Defense to participate in the military parade celebrating Côte d'Ivoire’s 64th Independence Day. The parade will take place today in Grand-Bassam, a seaside town located 40 kilometers southeast of Abidjan.
This participation marks a significant moment in the festivities, reflecting the strong bilateral ties between Côte d'Ivoire and China. The Chinese unit will join a grand display that includes military aerial, pedestrian, and motorized parades, as well as a parachute jump demonstration on the Grand-Bassam highway toll plaza.
According to Colonel Major Charles Yaké, Commander of the 1st Military Region of Abidjan, the parade will feature a total of 4,595 participants, comprising 3,801 members of defense, security forces, and paramilitary units, alongside 794 civilians.
This year’s celebration is particularly noteworthy as it marks a return to a more traditional and grand celebration after several years of subdued commemorations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the passing of former President Henri Konan Bédié.
